"Arctic Metagaz": Russian gas tanker adrift after fire in the Mediterranean – Moscow blames Kyiv
A Russian gas tanker, Arctic Metagaz, is adrift in the Mediterranean Sea after a fire, raising concerns about its potential danger to navigation near Italy's Lampedusa island.
The Russian gas tanker, Arctic Metagaz, is currently adrift without a crew in the Mediterranean Sea, headed towards the Italian island of Lampedusa. This situation follows a fire that broke out on the vessel last Tuesday off the Libyan coast due to explosions. Given its cargo of thousands of tons of liquefied gas, maritime authorities, particularly in Malta, have issued warnings regarding the potential risks the tanker poses to other vessels, especially as it might be unable to maneuver effectively due to the damage it sustained.
The Prime Minister of Malta, Robert Abela, indicated that an emergency response plan is being prepared to manage the risks associated with the Arctic Metagaz. Reportedly, the tanker is currently located about 110 kilometers from the Maltese coast, in international waters. Maritime authorities have cautioned nearby ships to maintain a distance of at least five nautical miles from the tanker to ensure safety, as there has been no confirmation from Italian authorities about the vessel's trajectory towards Lampedusa.
In addition to the immediate maritime safety implications, the incident has escalated tensions in the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine, as Moscow has publicly accused Kyiv of being responsible for the explosions that led to the fire. This accusation highlights the broader geopolitical ramifications of the incident, particularly concerning energy security and maritime navigation in the region, which could have significant consequences for European energy supplies amidst the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
