Damaged Russian tanker carrying natural gas floats into Libyan waters
A damaged Russian tanker carrying liquified natural gas has drifted into Libyan waters, raising urgent ecological concerns and prompting action from several European countries.
The Arctic Metagaz, a severely damaged Russian tanker, has recently floated into Libyan waters after being adrift in the Mediterranean for nearly two weeks. This vessel was part of a shadow fleet utilized by Russia to bypass sanctions imposed due to its invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. Following a drone attack near Maltese waters that left the tanker with a significant breach, there has been a growing alarm over the environmental risks posed by its presence in the Mediterranean Sea.
In response to the hazardous situation, the governments of Italy, France, Malta, Spain, Greece, and Cyprus have collectively reached out to the European Commission, signaling their urgency regarding the perilous implications of the tanker drifting in the area. They labeled the situation as an "imminent and serious risk of a major ecological disaster," highlighting how the accident could potentially unleash substantial environmental damage in the Mediterranean Sea.
As the civil protection agency of Italy continues to monitor the situation, they have confirmed that the tanker was previously located between Malta and Lampedusa before its drift into Libyan waters. The distress signals from the crew have been acknowledged, and it is reported that they have been rescued. However, the focus remains on preventing an ecological catastrophe, making this incident not only a matter of global maritime policy but also a pressing environmental concern affecting the Mediterranean region.
