Special Prosecutors Intensify Investigation into Kwon Jong-geun and Yoon Han-hong
South Korea's special prosecution team is intensifying investigations into Kwon Jong-geun, former commander of the Special Warfare Command, and Yoon Han-hong, a member of the National Assembly, amid ongoing probes into major scandals.
The special prosecution team, which deals with the remaining cases of significant scandals including a coup, is ramping up its investigations following the questioning of Kwon Jong-geun, former commander of the Special Warfare Command. The team revealed it has summoned Kwon as a witness to examine the orders issued by the Joint Chiefs of Staff immediately after the emergency martial law was declared. They have previously identified orders allegedly directing military forces towards maintaining martial law operations and are now scrutinizing Kwon's involvement in these directives.
In parallel, the investigation into allegations of preferential treatment in the renovation of the presidential residence has progressed with a raid on the home of Yoon Han-hong, a member of the ruling People Power Party. This follows testimonies suggesting that Yoon pushed for the awarding of contracts to an interior company chosen by Kim Geon-hee, further complicating his connections to the renovation dealings and raising concerns over the influence exerted by the former president's family. The special prosecutors are expected to call Yoon in for questioning to determine his role in the assignment of the renovation work.
Additionally, the special prosecution team is continuing investigations into other related figures such as Lee Chang-soo and former Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport Won Hee-ryong, tying them to allegations of market manipulation involving Deutsche Motors and concerning infrastructure projects, thereby imposing travel bans on these individuals while seeking to strengthen their case against them. The comprehensive investigation has broad implications, indicating efforts to tackle high-profile corruption and political misconduct in South Korea.
