Naples, hepatitis A: cases on the rise, vaccines strengthened

The hepatitis A outbreak in Campania is intensifying, particularly in Naples and Salerno, prompting increased vaccination efforts amid concerns for community health.

The hepatitis A outbreak in Campania, Italy, is growing, with Salerno reporting 7 confirmed cases and a concerning escalation in Naples where 53 patients are hospitalized at the Cotugno hospital. Additionally, there are reports of 9 individuals in emergency care, and estimates suggest there may be around a hundred more undetected cases. In response to this public health issue, health authorities are enhancing vaccine supply to curb further spread.

Dr. Raffaele Di Sarno, head of the infectious disease and pneumology emergency department at the Cotugno hospital, provided these statistics and reassured that the current patients are stable, with no complications arising thus far. Most patients fall within the age range of 30 to 40 years and have recently consumed raw seafood, which is thought to be a common source of the recent infections. The public health concern extends beyond just Naples as reports indicate similar cases from nearby regions, including Caserta.

Despite the rising number of cases, Dr. Di Sarno emphasized that this situation does not constitute an epidemic at this point. They continue to monitor the spread closely and ensure appropriate medical responses are in place. The focus now is to mitigate further infections through vaccination and public awareness to inform and protect the community.
