Cases of hepatitis A increase in Ribeirão Preto, SP, and put Health on alert
Health authorities in Ribeirão Preto, SP, report a significant rise in hepatitis A cases in early 2023 compared to the previous year, leading to heightened alertness among health officials.
In Ribeirão Preto, São Paulo, there has been a notable increase in hepatitis A cases, with the municipal health department reporting 203 cases from January to March 2023, a stark rise from only two cases during the same period in 2022. This increase was observed starting in December 2022 and has continued into the new year, prompting health officials to issue alerts about the situation.
According to Luzia Márcia Romanholi Passos, the undersecretary of Health Surveillance, while the situation is classified as an outbreak, it is not characterized by exponential growth; rather, the number of cases exceeds expected levels. The persistent rise has been evident through January, February, and into March, leading health authorities to take necessary precautions and maintain public awareness regarding the virus's transmission methods.
Hepatitis A is a highly contagious viral infection that only affects humans, spreading through contaminated food, water, or surfaces. This infectious disease highlights the importance of hygiene and public health measures to control outbreaks. The surge in cases reflects broader public health challenges, emphasizing the need for targeted health interventions to prevent further transmission and ensure community safety.
