Traffic violations make Beijing tighten rules for self-propelled vehicles, popular in São Paulo

Beijing has decided to enforce stricter regulations on self-propelled vehicles, including e-bikes, due to traffic violations and safety concerns.

In response to traffic violations, accidents, illegal modifications, and inadequate registrations, Beijing has decided to impose stricter rules on self-propelled vehicles commonly known as 'e-bikes.' These regulations will come into effect in May 2026 and aim to enhance safety throughout the manufacturing and usage chain. The new rules will cover various aspects including manufacturing, sales, registration, circulation, parking, and recharging of these vehicles.

The director of the Institute of Transportation Engineering and Geomatics at Tsinghua University, Ruimin Li, emphasized that the regulatory measures aim to achieve two main objectives: improving vehicle safety and enhancing the management of both vehicles and traffic. This approach highlights a growing concern over the rising number of accidents and safety incidents linked to these increasingly popular modes of transportation, particularly as they gain traction in urban areas like São Paulo, Brazil.

An additional concern is that many vehicles that appear to be self-propelled e-bikes are actually scooters, which complicates the regulatory landscape. This blurring of lines between vehicle types poses challenges for law enforcement and increases the risk of accidents on the roads. As regulations tighten, it remains to be seen how these changes will impact the landscape of urban mobility in both Beijing and similar cities around the world.
