Farewell to director Jānis Streičs will take place in Riga

A farewell event for renowned director Jānis Streičs will be held today in Riga.

Today, Riga will honor the memory of Jānis Streičs, a distinguished director, screenwriter, actor, writer, and painter who passed away on March 5 at the age of 89. The farewell ceremony will take place in the Great Hall of the Latvian Society House from 12 PM to 2:30 PM, where attendees will celebrate his contributions to cinema and theater. In addition, starting from noon, films directed by Streičs will be screened in Vērmanes Garden, supported by the Riga City Council, allowing the public to reflect on his artistic legacy.

The Latvian Society House will also host a memorial book where friends, contemporaries, admirers, and supporters of Streičs can write messages of remembrance or appreciation from 11 AM to 7 PM today and on March 23 from 10 AM to 7 PM. This initiative serves as a platform for the community to express their love and admiration for the talented artist who significantly impacted the cultural landscape of Latvia.

Jānis Streičs was born on September 26, 1936, in Preiļi and began his career in cinema and theater direction in 1964. His extensive body of work and dedication to the arts have left an indelible mark on Latvian culture, making his farewell not only a personal loss for many but also a significant cultural moment for the nation as it reflects on the life and achievements of one of its most beloved directors.
