Electric failure at Pronto-Socorro da Augusto Montenegro causes patient transfers in Belém

An electrical failure at the Dr. Roberto Macedo Emergency Room in Belém led to patient transfers and the suspension of services due to power fluctuations.

On Saturday, an electrical failure at the Dr. Roberto Macedo Emergency Room, commonly known as the Augusto Montenegro Emergency Room in Belém, caused significant disruptions. Reports indicate that throughout the day, the facility experienced severe fluctuations in power supply, primarily due to a failure in the generator that powers the hospital. Medical staff were compelled to act swiftly to ensure patient safety, especially for those in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), leading to necessary patient transfers to other health facilities.

Emergency response units, including helicopters and ambulances, were mobilized, escorted by Military Police, to safely transport patients to alternative locations like the Hospital Abelardo Santos. The situation raised considerable alarm among families and health officials, highlighting vulnerabilities in the hospital's infrastructure during critical times. The local fire department was also on scene to manage the emergency and assist with the ongoing patient transfers, reflecting a coordinated response to the crisis.

The Secretary of State for Public Health of Pará, known as Sespa, issued a statement confirming the occurrence and outlined ongoing efforts to stabilize the hospital's operations. This event underscores the necessity for upgrades in medical facilities’ emergency power systems to prevent similar incidents in the future ultimately ensuring continuous and reliable patient care within the region.
