The Serra Verde Express, which has been operating the scenic train route between Curitiba and Morretes for nearly 30 years, has unveiled a reconstructed locomotive that represents a $1 million investment. This new addition is designed to improve service on the main tourist railway in Brazil, which is critical for attracting visitors to the picturesque Serra do Mar region. The company reported that the previous locomotive was in such poor condition that it was deemed unusable, necessitating this significant investment to enhance the train experience.
Transported over six days from Bauru to Curitiba, the 70-ton locomotive is expected to be utilized in short trips as well as new projects the Serra Verde Express plans to launch this year. With a length of 11.4 meters and a diesel engine generating 1,200 horsepower, this locomotive can pull up to 11 carriages, thereby increasing the capacity and efficiency of the train service. The company also runs another railway called the Trem da República, between Itu and Salto in São Paulo, indicating its broader role in the Brazilian tourist railway sector.
The train's journey between Curitiba and Morretes, which typically takes four hours and 15 minutes, is not only an important transportation route but also a significant tourist attraction, offering stunning views of the Brazilian landscape. The introduction of this upgraded locomotive is a strategic move by Serra Verde Express to assure visitors of a comfortable and enjoyable travel experience while exploring one of Brazil's most beautiful regions.
