More than 23,000 readers have cast their votes: The best authors awarded at the big reading festival

Over 23,000 readers from Latvia and abroad participated in a reading program that culminated in an awards ceremony for the best authors in children's and youth literature.

This year's reading promotion program facilitated by the National Library of Latvia engaged 912 libraries and attracted more than 23,000 participants from schools and libraries across Latvia, as well as from 91 Latvian diaspora centers in 35 countries. Among the participants, they evaluated a collection of 29 books from last year, categorized into six age groups, highlighting a significant representation of Latvian authors in the selection. Notably, 16 out of the 29 nominated books were authored by Latvians, emphasizing the strong literary tradition in the country.

The awards featured responses from the world's largest reading jury, where not only book ratings were considered, but participants were also required to provide comments justifying their choices for the best works. This year, the book "Ceļotājs čemodāns," by Inese Zandere and Anete Melece, emerged as the favorite among readers aged 5 and above, indicating a deep connection between the children and the themes presented in the story.

The initiative reflects an encouraging trend in fostering reading habits among younger generations in Latvia, engaging them in both local and global discourses. It highlights the importance of literary engagement and the critical role that libraries and educational institutions play in cultivating a love for reading. By bridging local talent with the diaspora community, the program serves to reinforce cultural identity and promote Latvian literature on a broader scale.
