Great Reading Festival Celebrated at the National Library of Latvia
The National Library of Latvia celebrates its Great Reading Festival, highlighting the importance of reading and announcing the winners of its reading programs.
The National Library of Latvia (LNB) is hosting the Great Reading Festival today from 12 PM to 3 PM, as reported by Silvija Tretjakova, the head of the LNB Childrenβs Literature Centre. This event is a culmination of the reading promotion program 'Children, Youth and Parents Jury,' where the most-read authors, translators, and publishers will be honored, along with recognition for reading ambassadors. The event includes participation from 912 libraries and has engaged 23,300 readers from Latvian schools, libraries, and 91 diaspora centers across 35 countries this year.
In the 2025 collection of the 'Children, Youth and Parents Jury,' 29 books were included across six age groups, with a strong emphasis on original literature, spotlighting 16 works by Latvian authors. The diversity of literature is underscored by the inclusion of translated works as well. Notably, three books from Lithuanian and three from Swedish authors were translated, along with two English translations and one each from Estonian, French, Slovenian, Danish, and Dutch languages. This variety highlights the interconnectedness of cultures through literature and supports the library's mission to promote reading among different age groups.
The emphasis on recognizing authors and promoting reading within the community reflects an ongoing commitment by LNB to foster a love for reading among young people and families. As a significant player in Latvia's cultural landscape, the LNB not only serves as a repository of literature but also as a dynamic hub for engaging the public in literacy activities. This event, drawing widespread participation, aims to inspire future generations to appreciate reading as an essential skill and a pathway to knowledge.
