Loss: one of the founders of the Lithuanian basketball league, S. Vilkas, has died
S. Vilkas, a prominent figure in Lithuanian basketball and one of its league founders, passed away at the age of 86.
S. Vilkas, known as a crucial contributor to Lithuanian basketball, died earlier today at the age of 86. His passing was confirmed by Rimantas Cibauskas, president of the Lithuanian Student Basketball League, and Vladas Garastas, honorary president of the Lithuanian Basketball Federation. S. Vilkas was recognized for his monumental contributions to the sport, receiving several accolades over the years.
In 2000, he was awarded the silver medal by the Department of Physical Education and Sports for his meritorious service to Lithuanian sports, followed by the Commander’s Cross in 2010 and the LKL’s meritorious medal in 2009. Vilkas was also honored during the Centenary Celebration of Lithuanian Basketball in 2022, where he was recognized for his lifetime achievements in the sport alongside 14 other distinguished contributors.
S. Vilkas dedicated a considerable portion of his life to basketball, having played for Klaipėdos “Neptūnas” from 1965 to 1972 and serving in various capacities within the sport thereafter until 1986. His legacy will now be remembered as a foundational aspect of Lithuania’s rich basketball history as fans and colleagues mourn his passing and reflect on his impactful life.
