Collectors reject proposal but suspend strike and resume services in Baixada Santista
Garbage collectors in Baixada Santista, Brazil, suspended their strike to resume services while rejecting a proposal concerning transparency and compensation under the Results Participation Program.
Garbage collectors linked to the Terracom Group in Baixada Santista, SΓ£o Paulo, resumed their full services after suspending a strike that started on Monday, October 16. The workers initially halted their operations due to disagreements about the transparency and amounts involved in the Results Participation Program (PPR), which they claim are lower than those paid in 2025. Although around 70% of the workforce returned to work by Tuesday, they maintained their criticisms and pushed for better terms.
A union assembly held by the Union of Employees in Sanitation, Urban Cleaning, and Green Areas of Santos and Region (Siemaco) initiated the strike, illustrating the ongoing tensions over labor conditions and compensation among public service workers. Despite the halt in the strike, the rejection of the proposal indicates that the underlying issues concerning employee satisfaction and pay equity remain unresolved. This ongoing dialogue at the workplace highlights the need for better communication and negotiations between labor and management within this essential public service sector.
On October 20, a hearing took place at the Regional Labor Court in Santos to discuss these matters further, demonstrating the involvement of legal and governmental institutions in addressing the labor disputes. The situation remains critical as these workers play a significant role in maintaining public health and sanitation, and their demands reflect broader issues regarding labor rights and fair compensation in Brazil's urban services sector. The strike's suspension may provide temporary relief for service disruptions, but the issues at the heart of the conflict need strategic resolution to prevent future disputes.
