Urban cleaning strike hits six cities in Baixada Santista
About 3,000 urban cleaning professionals from Group Terracom have gone on strike in six cities in the Baixada Santista region due to disagreements over transparency and values of the Results Participation Program (PPR).
In a significant labor action, approximately 3,000 urban cleaning workers associated with Group Terracom initiated a strike on Monday, focusing on six municipalities in Brazil's Baixada Santista region. This strike is primarily driven by disputes related to the transparency and amount disbursed through the Results Participation Program (PPR), which has been highlighted by the workers' union as inadequate compared to previous years, specifically falling short of the allocations made in 2025.
The decision to strike was ratified during assembly meetings held early in the morning in the cities of Bertioga, Cubatão, Guarujá, Praia Grande, Santos, and São Vicente. The union representatives, particularly from the Union of Workers in Cleaning and Urban Conservation and Green Areas of Santos and Region (Siemaco), attended these gatherings to help mobilize the workforce. Union president André Domingues emphasized that the workers are frustrated with the lack of transparency and clarity regarding the criteria used to determine their benefits, asserting that the financial results reported by the companies do not align with the compensation received by employees.
This strike could cause disruption in waste management services across these cities and has implications for public health and environmental standards. The workers' demands for better transparency and enhanced remuneration through the PPR underline ongoing tensions between labor organizations and employers in the context of Brazil's broader economic challenges. The outcome of this strike will likely impact not just the current labor relations but also set a precedent for future negotiations in the urban cleaning sector.
