SMHI warns of grass fires

The Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute (SMHI) has issued warnings about a significant risk of grass fires in various regions of Sweden over the weekend.

The Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute (SMHI) has expanded its warnings regarding the risk of grass fires to include large areas of Svealand, Götaland, southern Norrland, and southern Västerbotten, effective Saturday and Sunday. Authorities have noted a considerable risk due to dry grass conditions, urging the public to exercise great caution when lighting outdoor fires. Areas such as Gotland and Öland are also highlighted as having a high risk for grass fires over the weekend.

The warning comes as dry weather conditions have been prevalent, and even normal outdoor activities could pose a fire hazard. On Saturday afternoon, a grass fire near train tracks in Skåne led to the suspension of train services between Malmö and Trelleborg. Though services resumed later, significant delays were reported, showcasing the immediate impacts of the fire risk.

Authorities are actively monitoring the situation and other areas at risk, promoting safety measures and awareness to prevent potential incidents. This warning serves as a reminder of the increased fire risks associated with dry weather and the need for responsible outdoor behavior during such conditions.
