Double alerts from SMHI – snowfall and grass fire

Sweden's meteorological authority SMHI has issued dual weather alerts for significant risks of grass fires and harsh winds accompanied by snowfall in specific regions.

The Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute (SMHI) has raised alarms about severe weather conditions, indicating a high risk of grass fires and strong winds combined with snowfall. The alerts are particularly focused on southern and eastern Götaland, excluding Gotland, as well as parts of eastern Svealand and the snow-free areas of southern Gävleborg county. The concern arises from dry grass from the previous year that has become highly flammable, making activities such as garden burning or sparks from machinery potential fire starters.

The issued alerts specify that the heightened risk for grass fires is expected to persist from 9 AM to 3 PM, coinciding with a forecasted rain that would potentially mitigate the situation. Besides, a yellow warning remains in effect until early morning for strong or very strong winds in conjunction with snowfall in certain mountainous regions such as the southern Jämtlandsfjällen and northern Dalafjällen. Similar warnings for the southern Dalafjällen are set to expire at 11 PM on Thursday, highlighting the urgent need for vigilance in these areas.

These weather alerts point to the unusual climatic conditions occurring during the transition to spring in Sweden, which can lead to significant safety hazards. The combination of increased fire risks and adverse weather conditions poses a challenge for residents and emergency services in managing potential disasters. Authorities are urging the public to exercise caution and stay informed about weather developments over the coming days, especially related to outdoor activities that could trigger fires.
