Guayaquil Students Compete in Tunisia with Project on Totumo to Reduce Disease-Associated Processes
Two students from Guayaquil are representing Ecuador at an international science fair in Tunisia with their project on the medicinal uses of the totumo fruit.
Two students from the Unidad Educativa Mariscal Sucre in northern Guayaquil, Dorcas Gallardo and Keila MorΓ‘n, are poised to represent Ecuador at the I-FESTΒ² 2026, an international science fair taking place in Tunisia from March 23 to 29. They have been preparing for nearly five months, having secured their qualification in September 2025 by competing against numerous schools from Guayaquil and neighboring cantons. Their diligent preparation includes comprehensive practice for their presentation and enhancing their English and French language skills, as these will be crucial during the evaluation process.
The focus of their project, titled 'Totu Sanguis,' involves the medicinal properties of the totumo (Crescentia cujete) fruit, known for its various health benefits. As part of their research, the students developed a jam and wine made from totumo, aiming to demonstrate how these innovative products could potentially contribute to reducing processes associated with various diseases. Their project highlights the importance of local resources in addressing public health challenges and underscores the girls' commitment to scientific exploration.
Their achievement not only showcases their individual talents but also brings attention to the educational initiatives and potential of Ecuadorian students on an international platform. The competition is expected to pose challenges, but Dorcas and Keila's participation symbolizes the growing interest in science and innovation among young minds in Ecuador, and their success could inspire other students to engage in similar pursuits.
