The Brazilian Meteorological Institute, Inmet, has issued a yellow alert indicating potential hazards due to heavy rainfall in Natal and more than 150 cities in the state of Rio Grande do Norte. This alert classifies the severity as the lowest level, yet warns of possible rain intensities ranging from 20 to 30 millimeters per hour or up to 50 millimeters within a day, along with the risk of strong winds blowing at speeds between 40 and 60 km/h.
While the alert signifies a low risk of major incidents such as power outages or tree falls, residents are advised to take precautions against the climatic conditions. Inmet strongly recommends that individuals avoid seeking shelter under trees to reduce the risk of falling branches and electrical discharges, as well as to keep vehicles away from transmission towers and billboards during the storm. Further, the public is urged to refrain from using plugged-in electronic devices until the weather conditions improve.
The alert stretches over a significant number of cities, highlighting not only the immediate weather threats but also the authoritiesβ focus on ensuring safety and preparedness among residents. Following the forecast, Rio Grande do Norte experienced nearly 2,000 lightning strikes between Wednesday and Thursday, reinforcing the urgency of the warnings and the necessity for persons in the affected areas to remain vigilant and heed the guidance of the authorities, including contacting emergency services when needed.
