The IMO is concerned about the rapidly growing risks in maritime transport - Finland is in an exceptionally important period

The International Maritime Organization (IMO) warns of increasing risks to maritime trade amid geopolitical tensions and environmental challenges, with Finland actively participating in discussions on global shipping safety.

The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has expressed serious concerns regarding the escalating risks in international maritime shipping, which have been aggravated even before the current conflicts involving Israel, the United States, and Iran. The challenges for crews at sea are increasing due to geopolitical tensions, risks of cyber attacks, and the intensification of natural phenomena. A particular point of concern includes Iran's threats of mine-laying in the Strait of Hormuz, which is a crucial global shipping chokepoint, potentially endangering the lives of sailors and the flow of international trade.

Teemu Turunen, Finland's ambassador to London and a permanent representative at the IMO, indicated that the organization held an extraordinary session focused on the deteriorating situation in the Strait of Hormuz. In a phone interview, Turunen noted that the IMO condemns any attacks against innocent merchant vessels and emphasizes the urgency for international cooperation to ensure maritime safety. He stressed that individual countries will make decisions regarding their actions based on their own assessments of the risks involved.

The current geopolitical climate has seen U.S. President Donald Trump urging other nations to safeguard the shipping routes through military escort operations. As maritime safety remains a key concern in Finland and other nations reliant on these trade routes, the call for solidarity and collective action within the international community is more pressing than ever, particularly as the impacts of increased threats could have far-reaching consequences for global commerce.
