Latvian soldiers are planned to be recruited into the prestigious Rangers unit

Latvian Defense Service soldiers will soon have the opportunity to serve in the National Armed Forces' Special Operations Forces Rangers sub-unit, as revealed by the commander of the NBS Special Operations Command.

Latvia's national defense strategy continues to evolve with plans for the recruitment of soldiers from the state defense service into the elite Rangers sub-unit of the National Armed Forces' Special Operations Forces. This initiative was announced by Colonel Ainārs Rauza, the commander of the NBS Special Operations Command, who noted that while specific timelines for recruitment remain unspecified, it is anticipated to begin in the coming years. As of now, the core of the Rangers unit is actively being developed, facilitated by recent training courses aimed at preparing both Rangers and future instructors.

The training programs established have already completed two courses, equipping participants to undertake various missions associated with the Rangers. Notably, while these soldiers will be capable of performing tasks similar to those of the elite 'Green Berets' of the Special Task Units (SUV), the Rangers will focus on operations that are less complex and demanding than those typically handled by the 'Green Berets'. This distinction emphasizes the Rangers’ role within the broader framework of Latvia's military capabilities, ensuring a diversified skill set within the armed forces.

This strategic move aligns with Latvia's ongoing efforts to enhance its defense readiness and operational efficiency in response to regional security challenges. By integrating state defense service soldiers into specialized units, the Latvian military aims to bolster its capabilities and improve its overall force composition, positioning itself more effectively in a rapidly changing geopolitical landscape.
