People in Northern Sweden are the worst in the country at using condoms

A recent survey indicates that while six out of ten people from Northern Sweden want to use condoms during their first sexual encounter, only half actually do so, marking the lowest usage rates in the country.

According to RFSU's annual survey, individuals from Northern Sweden demonstrate the least condom usage in the country, despite a significant desire to use them during first sexual experiences. The survey highlights that although 60% of respondents expressed a wish to use a condom, only 50% followed through with it. In contrast, the national average reports 40% condom usage among all segments of the population. This discrepancy raises concerns about sexual health education and the awareness of sexually transmitted infections among young individuals in these areas.

In addition to low condom usage, the survey reveals that the use of birth control pills, particularly among young people aged 15 to 24 in Northern Sweden, is higher than the national average. This suggests a complex landscape of sexual health practices where birth control is favored over barrier methods. Pelle Ullholm, a sexual educator with RFSU, points out that the perception that both partners might be inexperienced may lead to a false sense of security, diminishing the urgency to use condoms, especially when one partner is on birth control pills.

Overall, this situation emphasizes the need for improved sexual health education in Northern Sweden, particularly targeting young populations. Educators advocate for the use of dual contraceptive methods to enhance protection against both unintended pregnancies and sexually transmitted infections. As sexual activity increases, individuals often become more informed about the importance of condoms, underscoring the necessity of addressing these educational gaps early on.
