Swedish Condom Users Best in the Nordic Countries

An increasing number of Swedes are using condoms, with significant growth among young people, according to a new report from RFSU.

A new report from the Swedish Association for Sexuality Education (RFSU) shows a notable increase in condom usage among Swedes, particularly among young individuals. In the past year, 42% of Swedes reported using condoms, which is the highest percentage in the Nordic region and indicates an upward trend over the last five years. This increase is particularly significant among teenagers, an age group that had previously seen a decline in condom use.

Among those aged 16 to 20, the report highlights that 70% claimed to have used condoms in the last year, reflecting an increase from 61% in 2024. Additionally, the intention to use condoms with new partners has risen by 5% in this age group, with 70% expressing readiness. Furthermore, there is a growing comfort level among teenagers in suggesting condom use, with 57% feeling it is easy compared to 47% last year. The proportion of teenagers who used condoms during their first sexual encounter also increased to 54%, although they still lag behind their Finnish counterparts, who have a usage rate of 78%.

This increase in condom usage among young people could have significant implications for public health in Sweden, as it suggests a positive shift towards safer sexual practices. The report indicates that more young individuals are prioritizing safety and responsibility in their sexual relationships, which may contribute to a decline in sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and unplanned pregnancies in the future. Despite the progress, the report also highlights the need for continued education and resources to further improve sexual health awareness among Swedish teenagers, particularly in comparison to other Nordic countries.
