Police seize about two tons of illegally sourced copper in Rio Preto
Civil Police seized a large quantity of illegally sourced copper in São José do Rio Preto, Brazil, amounting to approximately two tons.
On Friday, October 20, 2023, the Civil Police in São José do Rio Preto, São Paulo, conducted a significant operation that led to the seizure of around two tons of illegally sourced copper. This cache included approximately 200 kilograms of commercial cables from energy and telecommunications companies, residential wiring, copper fittings, and plumbing pipes commonly used in air conditioning systems. The operation was prompted by a rise in thefts of copper wiring and related materials in the city and surrounding areas.
The investigation into these thefts began when local authorities noticed an increasing trend in the illicit procurement of copper. This led police to identify an individual suspected of collecting and receiving these stolen items. Following this lead, investigators tracked the suspect to a property in the Jardim Buritis neighborhood, where they discovered a substantial quantity of the seized materials. Upon their arrival, the 43-year-old suspect was apprehended in the act, further highlighting the ongoing issues surrounding metal theft in the region.
The rise in copper thefts poses significant concerns not only for local businesses and essential services that rely on electrical wiring but also for community safety and infrastructure integrity. Authorities have stressed the importance of community vigilance and have initiated further investigations to dismantle networks involved in the trafficking of stolen metal resources, illustrating the broader implications of such criminal activities on society.
