Federal Police seizes cars in São João del Rei during operation against illegal mining in Brazil

The Federal Police in Brazil seized two cars in São João del Rei during an operation targeting a criminal organization involved in the illegal extraction and commercialization of cassiterite.

The Brazilian Federal Police conducted a significant operation in São João del Rei, seizing a Toyota Hilux and a Corolla Cross as part of an investigation into a criminal organization engaged in the illegal extraction of cassiterite, a mineral crucial for manufacturing solder, metal alloys, and more. The operation took place on Thursday, with no arrests reported in the region at that time.

Investigations revealed that the criminal group was operating clandestine mining operations in locations across Brazil, including Amapá and Roraima, with connections to Venezuela. They used false invoices and shell companies to 'launder' the illegal cassiterite, effectively disguising the illegal origins of the mineral. This scheme reportedly injected approximately R$ 400 million (about $76 million) worth of illegal cassiterite into the formal market.

As a result of the operation, the Federal Justice has ordered the blocking of around R$ 405 million (approximately $77 million) in assets and funds linked to the accused individuals. Those under investigation may face serious charges including organized crime and money laundering, highlighting ongoing concerns regarding illegal mining activities in Brazil and their impact on both the economy and the environment.
