Classes suspended after rain floods municipal school in the rural area of Breves, Marajó
Classes at Santo Antônio Municipal School were suspended due to rain infiltrating the roof and flooding classrooms in Breves, Brazil.
Classes at the Santo Antônio Municipal School, located in the rural zone of Breves in the Marajó archipelago, were suspended on Friday, October 20, after heavy rain caused flooding within the classrooms due to roof leaks. Images from the site depict water entering the school and soaking the areas used for education, rendering the facilities unfit for use.
This issue is not new, as reported by the Pará Public Education Workers' Union, which highlighted that the school has been suffering from structural problems for over a year. These issues include compromises in various parts of the building such as the roof, ceiling, and floor, which have exacerbated the vulnerability of the school infrastructure to heavy rains and leaks.
The situation was first recognized during a visit by union representatives on the same day. They noted that due to the severe weather conditions and the lack of suitable accommodations for students, classes were dispensed for the day, highlighting the ongoing struggles faced by educational institutions in the area regarding infrastructural adequacy and maintenance responsibilities.
