Access bridge to Calçado collapses and classes are suspended after rains; VIDEO
Heavy rains caused the main access bridge to Calçado, Brazil, to collapse, leading to suspended classes as the city deals with flooding.
Severe rainfall struck the Agreste region of Pernambuco between Thursday night and Friday morning, causing significant damage in the municipality of Calçado. The main bridge connecting the city collapsed due to a surge in the river's water levels, halting both vehicle and pedestrian traffic. In response to flooding conditions, the local government announced that classes in the municipal school system would be suspended, with no set date for resuming activities. Videos circulating on social media have documented the bridge's collapse as well as two men reportedly swept away by the rushing water, although they were later rescued unharmed.
