Latvia consistently advocates for strengthening sanctions against Belarus, says Braže
Latvia's Foreign Minister Baiba Braže emphasizes the country's unwavering support for enhancing sanctions against Belarus in response to the regime's repressive policies and aggression towards Ukraine.
Latvia has firmly held its position on strengthening sanctions against Belarus, as expressed by Foreign Minister Baiba Braže during an interview with the LETA agency. She highlighted that Latvia is bound by the European Union's sanctions against Belarus, which were unanimously extended for another year on February 26. These sanctions are in response to the policies enacted by Belarusian dictator Alexander Lukashenko's regime, particularly its oppression of the Belarusian people and its support for Russia's aggressive war against Ukraine.
Minister Braže reinforced that the repressive and destabilizing policies of the Belarusian regime pose a threat to Latvia's security interests. She affirmed that sanctions should remain in place until there is a fundamental change in Belarusian policies, indicating that currently, no such signals exist. This statement emphasizes Latvia's commitment to supporting EU measures aimed at responding to the ongoing geopolitical challenges posed by Belarus and its ally Russia.
As reported by Lithuanian public media, Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda also made statements regarding the regional implications of Belarus's actions. The collective position of Baltic states is crucial in navigating the complex dynamics of security in Eastern Europe, especially considering the ongoing tensions in Ukraine. The solidarity among these nations highlights their shared concerns over regional stability and security, further emphasizing the need for continued sanctions against Belarus.
