Braže: Russia Threatens EU Security by Supporting Iran and Destabilizing Africa

Latvian Foreign Minister Baiba Braže criticized Russia for its ongoing aggression in Ukraine and its support for Iranian attacks, emphasizing the need for increased pressure on Russia to ensure global security.

In a statement made during the European Union's Foreign Affairs Council meeting in Brussels, Latvian Foreign Minister Baiba Braže addressed the threats posed by Russia. She highlighted Russia's aggression against Ukraine, specifically mentioning an attack on the Novodnistrovsk Hydroelectric Power Station that led to an oil spill in the Dniester River, jeopardizing Moldova's water supply and public health. Braže described Russia as a common problem for all, asserting that its actions continue to create a global security crisis.

Furthermore, Minister Braže called for allies and like-minded partners to exert greater pressure on Russia through new sanctions, including the urgent approval of the 20th round of EU sanctions targeting Russia's shadow fleet. She underlined the necessity of continuing Russia's international isolation by preventing its access to Western technologies, halting any trade connections, and avoiding circumvention of sanctions. This comprehensive approach aims to collectively address the threats posed by Russia not only to Ukraine but also to Europe and beyond, as it seeks to destabilize regions, including Africa.

Baiba Braže’s remarks not only amplify the concerns of Baltic states regarding Russia's expanding influence but also reflect a growing consensus within the EU regarding the need for a united front against Russian aggression. Her call for enhanced sanctions and isolation reflects an urgent recognition of the geopolitical dynamics at play, especially considering how these actions by Russia could have cascading effects on global security and stability.
