Three victims of the JK Bridge collapse remain missing and families have not been compensated

Three victims of the JK Bridge collapse in Brazil remain missing and families have not received compensation for their losses.

Three individuals are still unaccounted for following the collapse of the JK Bridge, which took place on December 22, 2024, spanning the Tocantins and Maranhão states. The event, which occurred shortly before 3 PM, resulted in the central span of the bridge collapsing and sending multiple vehicles into the depths of the Tocantins River. As the tragedy unfolded, 14 lives were lost, with three individuals still missing, and one confirmed injury reported. The families affected by this disaster have not yet received any compensation, adding to their distress during this trying time.

Images released on social media show the devastating moment vehicles, including cars, trucks, and a motorcycle, were thrown into the river due to the structural failure. The three missing victims include Salmon Alves Santos, aged 65; Felipe Giuvannuci Ribeiro, 10; and Gessimar Ferreira da Costa, aged 38. Felipe was traveling with his grandparents at the time of the accident; while his grandmother’s body has been recovered, the search continues for the other missing individuals. This lingering uncertainty leaves their families searching for closure, amidst an already heartbreaking situation.

As searches were conducted until January 2025, community support and public interest remained high, with many clamoring for accountability regarding the bridge's collapse. The lack of financial reparations for the families intensifies the emotional burden they endure, raising questions about infrastructure safety in Brazil and the governmental response to such tragedies. Without proper compensation and closure, those affected must navigate both their grief and the pressing need for justice in the wake of this disaster.
