Kratos in Alytus Apartment Buildings: Belarusian Smuggling in the Basement, Drugs in the Apartment

Authorities in Alytus have arrested two men for storing smuggled Belarusian cigarettes and illegal drugs in their apartment.

On Thursday, in an apartment building in Alytus, Lithuania, the Border Guard Service (VSAT) apprehended two local residents, aged 31 and 34, in possession of a significant quantity of smuggled cigarettes in the basement. Specifically, they were found with 5,540 packets of 'Marlboro Gold' and 'NZ Gold' cigarettes bearing Belarusian tax stamps, with an estimated value of €28,918, including all applicable taxes. The police action highlights ongoing challenges with cigarette smuggling in the region, particularly from Belarus, as well as the broader issue of illegal trade impacting the Lithuanian economy.

Further investigations revealed that during a search of the younger suspect's apartment, authorities discovered suspected narcotic substances along with €2,250 in cash, which may have been acquired through illegal activities. This raises concerns about the potential link between tobacco smuggling and drug-related crimes, indicating the varied nature of illegal enterprises operating in Lithuania. Additionally, the authorities seized a Škoda Octavia vehicle suspected of being involved in these illegal activities.

The Border Guard Service has initiated a pre-trial investigation for illegal possession of excise goods, led by a prosecutor from the Kaunas Regional Prosecutor's Office. Such actions point to a systematic effort by law enforcement to combat organized smuggling in the region, reflecting a coordinated approach to tackling both the distribution of illegal tobacco and drug-related offenses that jeopardize public safety and state revenues.
