New troubles for a Druskininkai resident due to Belarusian cigarettes
A Druskininkai man was caught smuggling Belarusian cigarettes, leading to further investigations by border officers.
Authorities in Lithuania apprehended a 43-year-old resident of Druskininkai for smuggling Belarusian cigarettes. The incident occurred when the State Border Guard Service (VSAT) officers stopped his vehicle, an Opel Zafira, for inspection, uncovering a hidden stash of cigarettes in the car. This individual has previous encounters with the border police, raising suspicions about his activities.
Following the vehicle inspection, VSAT officers conducted a search at the suspect's residence in Druskininkai, where they seized numerous packages of cigarettes lacking excise tax stamps. Overall, officers recovered 1,405 packs of various Belarusian cigarettes from both the car and the suspect's home, along with 5,000 euros presumed to be derived from illegal activities. The case highlights ongoing issues with cigarette smuggling across the borders, particularly involving products from Belarus.
In a bid to gather further evidence, VSAT officers also executed a search at another location connected to the suspect—a garage associated with him. The operation is part of a broader effort to clamp down on the trafficking of contraband goods and address illegal trade routes that undermine the economy and public health. This incident underscores the escalating challenges Lithuania faces in the fight against smuggling, especially in regions close to the Belarusian border, signaling a need for more stringent enforcement measures to deter such activities.
