Suspicion of Salmonella in Two Riga Kindergartens, Two Children Hospitalized

Two kindergartens in Riga are under investigation for Salmonella after two children were hospitalized with symptoms.

In two pre-school educational institutions in Riga, suspicions of Salmonella infection have emerged, leading to the hospitalization of two children. The Disease Prevention and Control Center confirmed that the first symptoms appeared on March 18, and the center received information about the cases on March 19, prompting an immediate epidemiological investigation. Currently, around 40 cases of illness have been identified among both children and staff, with the potential for the number to increase according to health officials.

The symptoms reported include diarrhea and high fever. The two affected children are currently hospitalized, while others are receiving outpatient treatment for similar symptoms. At the Children’s Clinical University Hospital, several preschool-aged children from different kindergartens are being treated for gastrointestinal infection symptoms, with two cases confirmed as Salmonella. Fortunately, none of the hospitalized children's conditions are critical, as confirmed by the hospital.

The Disease Prevention and Control Center is actively addressing the situation, conducting investigations to determine the source of the outbreak. This incident raises concerns over food safety and health protocols in educational settings, highlighting the importance of monitoring food suppliers associated with these institutions to prevent further spread of the infection among the young population.
