Suspicion of Salmonella outbreak in two kindergartens in Riga; 40 cases reported
An outbreak of salmonellosis has been reported in two kindergartens in Riga, with 40 cases confirmed so far.
Authorities in Riga are investigating a suspected outbreak of salmonellosis in two local kindergartens, which has led to a total of 40 reported cases of illness among both children and adults. The first symptoms were reported on March 18, prompting the Public Health Agency (SPKC) to begin an epidemiological investigation. Initial findings suggest that the cases are linked to food served at the kindergartens, both of which are provided meals by the same catering company.
The SPKC's representative has confirmed that out of the 40 reported cases, two individuals have been hospitalized while the others are receiving outpatient treatment. This situation highlights the importance of food safety in child care institutions and has led to immediate actions being taken by the Food and Veterinary Service (PVD) to inspect the catering company responsible for the meals served at the affected kindergartens.
In response to the outbreak, the PVD conducted checks at both the 'Sprīdītis' kindergarten and the cooking location in another kindergarten on the same day they received the information. The rapid response underscores the need for vigilance in food safety measures, particularly in environments where vulnerable populations like young children are at risk. Authorities are continuing to monitor the situation closely and take necessary actions to prevent further incidents.
