Plenković from Brussels: Croatia is ready for energy transition

Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenković discussed the energy transition and Hungary's blockade of a financial guarantee for Ukraine during a European Council meeting.

During the recent European Council meeting, Prime Minister Andrej Plenković highlighted the central themes, primarily focusing on Ukraine's situation and the ongoing support for the country amidst Hungary's refusal to approve a crucial financial guarantee. He emphasized the pressing need for Europe to address its energy dependence as it moves towards an energy transition. Plenković mentioned that the Croatian government continues to implement measures aimed at improving the situation for pensioners, showcasing a commitment to social welfare alongside international diplomatic efforts.

Plenković specifically pointed out that Hungary currently blocks consent for the amendment of the regulation concerning the multiannual financial framework, which directly impedes the €90 billion loan guarantee intended for Ukraine, a resolution reached in December. This blockage is linked to operational issues with the Druzhba oil pipeline, which supplies oil to Slovakia and Hungary. This persistent obstruction by Hungary has drawn criticism from other EU member states, highlighting the complexities involved in consensus-building within the EU.

The implications of these discussions are significant as they reflect the broader challenges Europe faces regarding energy security, particularly amid geopolitical tensions. By acknowledging Croatia's readiness for an energy transition, Plenković positions the nation as proactive in the EU’s collective goals. This stance is crucial not only for Croatia’s future in energy sectors but also for maintaining unity in tackling external threats like those posed by the ongoing situation in Ukraine.
