The Dispute Between JANAF and MOL: Plenković Claims That Neither Hungary nor Slovakia Needs Russian Oil
Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenković asserts that discussions are ongoing regarding the potential transport of Russian oil by MOL through Croatia, amid varying sanctions regimes from the EU and the US.
Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenković stated on Saturday that discussions are ongoing between Croatian authorities, relevant ministries, and the European Commission regarding the implications of potential sanctions on oil shipments announced by the Hungarian oil company MOL. The focus of these discussions is to determine whether the oil proposed for transport is subject to the sanctions imposed on Russia. As part of this dialogue, Plenković elaborated on MOL's request to allow the transport of Russian oil through Croatia, explaining that there are two distinct sanctions regimes: one from the European Union and another from the United States. He noted that JANAF, the pipeline operator, seems to have received announcements about seven or eight tankers carrying non-Russian oil, while one tanker is reportedly meant to carry Russian oil. This development raises important questions about the alignment of Croatia's oil transportation policies with international sanctions, and such decisions will be made after further consultations with the European Commission and the American administration. This situation showcases the complex interplay of energy security and geopolitical considerations in the region, particularly in the context of Ukraine's ongoing conflict and energy dependencies in Central Europe.
