Zomato has increased platform fees, now earning an extra 4.8 million daily

Zomato has raised its platform fees by nearly 19%, resulting in an additional daily revenue of approximately 4.8 million rupees.

Zomato, an online food delivery service, has announced a significant increase in its platform fees, raising them from ₹12.50 to ₹14.90, effective March 20. This 19% hike comes at a time when tensions in the Middle East are affecting gas supplies, which have subsequently impacted the availability of LPG. In response, the Indian government heeft raised domestic LPG supply to compensate for shortages in commercial cylinders.

With this increase, Zomato anticipates a substantial boost in its daily revenue, estimating an additional ₹4.8 million per day based on an average of 2 million orders received daily. The platform fee hike adds an extra charge on top of restaurant food prices, delivery fees, and GST, resulting in higher costs for consumers who rely on online food ordering during peak days like festivals and promotional offers. This could lead to consumer backlash as people face increased expenses for their favorite meals.

The implications of this fee hike extend beyond immediate revenue gains for Zomato; it may also affect consumer behavior. As food delivery costs rise, some customers might reconsider their dining habits or turn to alternative platforms. This change reflects broader challenges in the industry faced by delivery services amid fluctuating costs and market conditions, impacting not only consumers but the food delivery ecosystem overall.
