Police arrest three suspects, recover gun in Enugu
The Enugu Police have arrested three suspects during crime prevention operations, recovering a firearm and ammunition.
The Police Command in Enugu State has successfully arrested three suspects as part of coordinated crime prevention efforts in the region. According to SP Daniel Ndukwe, the spokesman for the police, the actions took place on March 15, starting with an interception of an unregistered tricycle along the Enugu-Port Harcourt Expressway, where police found a locally fabricated double-barrelled pistol hidden inside. Two suspects traveling in the tricycle, both aged 26, were apprehended during this operation.
Later on the same day, officers on stop-and-search duty along Nsukka Road in Orba managed to intercept a motorcycle with two young men aboard. When they noticed the police, one suspect fled into nearby bushes, but the motorcycle rider, a 17-year-old named Chinedu Harrison, was detained. Upon searching him, police recovered six rounds of 9mm live ammunition. This timely intervention by the police aims to curb rising crime rates in Enugu State, highlighting the ongoing efforts to ensure public safety.
These arrests reflect a proactive stance by law enforcement in tackling crime in Nigeria, especially in regions that have seen a spike in violent incidents recently. The recovery of illegal firearms is particularly alarming as it underscores the challenges police face in controlling armed violence in various states, while also raising questions about the sources of such weapons. Sustained pressure on criminal elements in society is critical for maintaining order and security in the area, and authorities will likely continue these operations in the future.
