Police arrest three, recover firearms, others in Enugu

The Enugu State Police arrested three suspects linked to a local criminal group and recovered firearms, ammunition, and drugs during recent operations.

The Enugu State Police Command has made significant arrests in the battle against local crime, detaining three men believed to have connections with the Supreme Vikings Confraternity, a notorious cult group in the region. The arrests, made on January 19, involved suspects Emmanuel Mba and Nnam Onukwube, who were caught in the Awkunanaw area of Enugu South Local Government. Police spokesperson SP Daniel Ndukwe detailed how Mba, identified as the group's leader, was found in possession of a range of illegal items, reinforcing the ongoing concerns about cult activities in Enugu State.

During the operation, law enforcement recovered not only a pump-action gun and a makeshift Beretta pistol but also 31 live cartridges and a substantial wrap of cannabis, indicating the suspects' involvement in both violent crime and drug trafficking. The police also seized a laptop and a motorcycle, which could be linked to further criminal enterprises. This highlights the multifaceted nature of crime in the area, incorporating both firearms and drug-related offenses.

These arrests come at a time when the Enugu State Police are under scrutiny for their efforts in tackling organized crime, particularly cult membership that has plagued the area. The successful operation may serve as a deterrent to potential recruits within these organizations and demonstrates a commitment to improving public safety in Enugu State. Continued efforts like these are essential for combating the influence of such groups and restoring order to the community.
