Astronomical Spring Begins in Latvia on Friday Afternoon
The astronomical spring in Latvia will commence on Friday at 16:46 with the equinox, marking the transition to the longer days of the season.
On Friday at 16:46, Latvia will officially enter astronomical spring as the equinox occurs, indicating that the Earth's northern hemisphere is transitioning into spring. This event is based on the sun's position as it crosses the celestial equator, often celebrated in Latvia as the Great Day in accordance with traditional customs.
The shift towards spring is marked by longer daylight hours; indeed, the day became longer than the night as of March 18, which reflects the moment when the upper edge of the sun’s disc appears or disappears on the horizon, rather than the center. The duration of sunlight is also affected by atmospheric refraction, contributing to the unique characteristics of the changing seasons.
Astronomical spring will last until the summer solstice on June 21 at 11:24. Meanwhile, meteorological spring had already begun on February 27, and meteorological summer will start when the average temperature exceeds 15 degrees Celsius for five consecutive days. Additionally, solar spring commenced earlier on February 5. The solar summer, considered the brightest quarter of the year, will span from May 7 to August 5.
