Doctor who touched patient’s breasts to measure temperature had previously harassed other women, say UPA employees

A doctor in Brazil, João Batista de Resende, is under investigation for sexual harassment after allegedly touching a patient's breasts during a medical examination, with reports suggesting a pattern of similar behavior.

João Batista de Resende, a 67-year-old doctor, is facing investigation by authorities in Franca, São Paulo, after an incident involving a sexual harassment claim brought forth by an 18-year-old patient. The incident occurred when the patient visited the local Urgent Care Unit (UPA) for a sore throat, during which the doctor allegedly touched her breasts, claiming it was to measure her temperature. Following the incident, the local police were called to the scene, highlighting the immediate response to the disturbing claims.

Upon investigation, it was revealed by UPA staff that such incidents involving the doctor might not be isolated events. Employees reported a pattern of behavior, remarking that the doctor has a history of similar accusations, implied by their expression 'the doctor strikes again.' These allegations suggest a concerning trend of sexual misconduct, raising questions about how long such behavior may have endured without appropriate action being taken.

Resende was briefly detained but released during a custody hearing the following day. The case has been formally registered as sexual harassment under false pretenses, and the investigation continues under the auspices of the Women's Defense Police Department. The ongoing inquiry aims to uncover the full extent of the allegations against Resende and address the serious implications of such professional misconduct in healthcare settings.
