Local governments will be able to restrict noise in entertainment venues

Latvian local governments will soon have the authority to regulate noise levels in entertainment venues to better protect residents from unwanted noise.

In Latvia, new amendments to existing laws will empower local governments to limit noise from entertainment venues, aiming to protect residents from disruptive sounds stemming from various events and activities. Currently, local authorities and infrastructure managers are required to assess and reduce environmental noise through strategies such as noise mapping and action plans. The amendments will expand their responsibilities, allowing them to enforce regulations specifically to address unwanted noise in their jurisdictions.

Under the new regulations, municipalities can issue permits to events and entertainment venues that are likely to generate noise. They will also be able to set requirements for the use of sound amplification equipment and sound insulation, ensuring better control over noise levels. Exceptions are noted for activities such as shooting training and hunting which may still generate significant sound but are deemed essential.

This move comes after years of discussions regarding noise control in entertainment areas in Latvia. Implementing additional measures to manage noise will likely improve the quality of life for residents living in proximity to entertainment venues, though it may also pose challenges for businesses reliant on events that generate noise.
