Trans and non-binary people will be able to correct name and gender during free event in DF
Trans and non-binary individuals in the Federal District of Brazil can legally change their name and gender through a free event organized by the public defender's office.
A free event allowing trans and non-binary residents of the Federal District in Brazil to correct their name and gender is scheduled for April 16. This initiative, organized by the human rights promotion and defense nucleus of the DF public defender's office in collaboration with the Distrito Drag collective, aims to support individuals with limited income—specifically those whose family earnings are up to five minimum wages. Participants will not only receive legal guidance but also assistance in preparing administrative requests and judicial actions, depending on their registration status.
During the event, various services will be provided, including the issuance of legal documents and certificates by the public defender's office. It’s noted that individuals registered in other states may also seek help in filing lawsuits to facilitate their legal transitions. The venue will accommodate 40 people, emphasizing the importance of prior registration to secure a spot for this critical support service. The accessibility of such events is essential for promoting the rights and recognition of marginalized communities.
This initiative reflects a broader societal movement towards inclusion and recognition of gender identity in Brazil. By enabling legally recognized changes in name and gender, the event not only empowers trans and non-binary individuals but also challenges bureaucratic hurdles that often accompany this process. The collaboration between legal entities and community organizations underscores a commitment to human rights and social justice, aiming to enhance the dignity and visibility of trans and non-binary people in the Federal District.
