‘Digital Village’ for the Disabled Opens in Cheongju to Experience Jobs, Play, and Rehabilitation in Virtual Reality

A new facility called ‘Digital Village’ has been opened in Cheongju, enabling disabled individuals to engage in job training, recreational activities, and rehabilitation using digital content like VR and AR.

Cheongju city has inaugurated a facility named ‘Digital Village’ that allows disabled individuals to utilize virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) for experiential learning, play, and rehabilitation training. This facility is notable as it is the first of its kind nationwide to offer dedicated space for job experiences, recreational activities, and rehabilitation services specifically designed for people with disabilities. The opening marks a significant step in enhancing accessibility and providing new opportunities for individuals with disabilities.

Funded with 4.9 billion won, the Digital Village spans a total area of 966 square meters and is located in the welfare town of Sinbong-dong, Cheongju. It includes various state-of-the-art features such as digital kiosks and car wash training systems for job experience, as well as VR skiing, wheelchair racing, and AR shooting for rehabilitation training. The facility is operated by the Cheongju City Disabled Welfare Center and will require users to make reservations through their website starting next month, allowing both disabled and non-disabled individuals to participate in activities.

According to Jung Hyun-myung, an official from the Cheongju Disabled Rehabilitation Team, the Digital Village is designed to leverage diverse digital content to offer experiences that closely mimic real-life situations, enabling engaging and rehabilitative activities. The initiative reflects an innovative approach towards inclusivity and the utilization of technology to enhance the quality of life and independence among people with disabilities.
