When the Community Center Opened, 120 Screens Responded

The introduction of 'smart community centers' in Daejeon has transformed the traditional gathering spaces for the elderly into vibrant digital welfare ecosystems.

In Daejeon, South Korea, traditional community centers for the elderly, known as 경로당, have undergone a remarkable transformation with the installation of advanced ICT (Information and Communication Technology) systems. These centers were simply venues for social interaction or television watching, but now they offer interactive sessions where senior citizens can engage in real-time conversations with instructors via large screens. They are also able to monitor their health through kiosks, signifying a shift toward a more engaging and health-focused environment.

The initiative, launched in 2021, was the first of its kind in South Korea, converting 120 out of 200 community centers in the region into 'smart centers.' These centers are now part of a vast network that allows simultaneous participation in classes across multiple locations. Utilizing a real-time video system, instructors conduct lessons from a dedicated studio within an elder welfare center, broadcasted to the 75-inch displays set up in the community centers. This innovative approach not only facilitates lessons three times a week, such as singing classes and health exercises but also fosters a sense of community as attendees can interact and support one another through a shared digital experience.

The transformation of these centers has had a significant impact on the daily lives of seniors. Initially, many were hesitant and found the technology intimidating. However, over the past five years, the atmosphere has evolved, with seniors fully embracing their new digital lifestyle. They now participate actively in classes, adjusting their daily routines to incorporate these activities that promote both social interaction and health awareness. This shift illustrates how digital technology can enhance the quality of life for the elderly, bridging generational gaps and enriching their communal experiences.
