In a shocking revelation from Bagpat, Uttar Pradesh, a sophisticated cyber fraud network has been exposed, opening up layers of online scams prevalent across the country. This isn't just any run-of-the-mill gang, but a well-organized group operating under the guise of alluring Instagram and Facebook ads featuring cheap and branded clothing. The gang entices users with irresistible offers, leading unsuspecting customers to click on these ads, only to be scammed as soon as they proceed with payment, order confirmation, or special offers.
The modus operandi of this gang was not limited to clothing scams; they also utilized various tactics such as online gaming, screen sharing, and fake links to gain access to victims' bank accounts. In many instances, once a victim attempted to make a payment or place an order, their money disappeared almost instantaneously. The investigation revealed that the group comprised mainly of young individuals who had completed their 12th grade, indicating a concerning trend of youth involvement in cybercrime.
Additionally, the police investigation uncovered that this gang had set up a complete fake call center in a single room, from which they conducted calls nationwide. Initially contacting victims via WhatsApp, they would subsequently use VPNs to make calls from foreign numbers, thereby masking their identity and location, which posed significant challenges for law enforcement in tracking and apprehending them. This case signifies not only the rise of such cybercriminal activities but also highlights the urgent need for heightened awareness and caution among online users to avoid falling prey to such scams.
