A 'North Korea View' Cafe is Opening at the Odusan Unification Observatory in Paju

A new 'North Korea view' cafe, operated by Tous les Jours, will open at the Odusan Unification Observatory in Paju, South Korea, offering visitors a unique perspective of North Korean landscapes.

The Odusan Unification Observatory, located at the confluence of the Han River and the Imjin River in Paju, South Korea, is set to open a new cafe called 'Tous les Jours' on April 24. This cafe is part of a growing trend in South Korea to provide visitors with views of North Korea, following the opening of a similar 'North Korea view' cafe at the Gimpo Aegibong Unification Observatory in November 2024. The Odusan Observatory serves as a national facility operated by the National Institute for Democracy and Peace Education, emphasizing both educational and experiential opportunities for visitors regarding inter-Korean issues.

Situated on the fourth floor of the observatory, the cafe will offer patrons panoramic views of North Korean landscapes, including towns in Kaepung County, North Hwanghae Province, and the Gwan San Peninsula, without the need for telescopes. This initiative not only enhances the visitor experience but also reinforces the observatory's role in promoting awareness of the complexities surrounding North Korea and the broader context of unification. Additionally, it provides a novel way for South Koreans to engage with the idea of unification while enjoying leisure activities.

As the opening of the cafe coincides with the upcoming cherry blossom festival named 'Spring, Together Gaze,' slated for next month at the observatory, this development presents an opportunity for cultural and educational engagement amongst visitors. The combination of natural beauty and informative landscape viewing hopes to attract both locals and tourists, stimulating interest in the sociopolitical dynamics of the Korean Peninsula.
