Government advances 13th salary from INSS to April and May; see calendar
The Brazilian government has announced the early payment of the 13th salary to INSS retirees and pensioners for the months of April and May.
The Brazilian federal government has decided to bring forward the payment of the 13th salary to retirees and pensioners of the National Social Security Institute (INSS) for the months of April and May, as per a presidential decree published in an extraordinary edition of the Official Gazette. This measure aims to provide additional financial support to beneficiaries during the upcoming months. Besides retirees and pensioners, individuals who received benefits such as temporary incapacity aid, accident aid, and imprisonment aid in the last year are also entitled to receive the 13th salary.
Payments will be made in two installments. The first installment, which constitutes half of the total benefit due, will be disbursed in April, coinciding with the regular monthly payment schedule for benefits. The second installment will follow in May, with deductions for Income Tax for those retirees surpassing the tax exemption threshold. The calculation of the Income Tax on the 13th salary will be conducted separately, as it is subject to exclusive withholding tax, which does not consider other monthly earnings when determining the tax amount.
Given the regular INSS payment calendar, beneficiaries can expect that the first installment will be deposited between April 24 and May 8. This decision is anticipated to ease the financial burden for many families during the coming months, aligning with the governmentβs strategy to bolster economic support amid ongoing economic challenges faced by citizens in Brazil.
