Sharing Warmth Over Breakfast: Kookmin University Communicates with Students Through the One Thousand Won Breakfast Event

Kookmin University celebrated the third anniversary of its 'One Thousand Won Breakfast' initiative, providing affordable nutritious meals to students while promoting regular breakfast habits.

On March 19, 2023, Kookmin University (led by President Jeong Seung-ryeol) hosted a breakfast event at the university's comprehensive welfare center to mark the third anniversary of its 'One Thousand Won Breakfast' initiative. The event featured President Jeong and Seongbuk District Mayor Lee Seung-ro serving breakfast to students and engaging with their representatives to foster communication. The initiative, organized by the Korea Agro-Fisheries & Food Trade Corporation, offers subsidized breakfast for students at a cost of only 1,000 won, with participation from 208 universities across the country by 2025, supported by the government, local authorities, and universities.

In Seongbuk District, the program began in 2023 as the first such initiative by a local government in the nation, with six participating universities and a total investment of 290 million won this year. Specifically, Kookmin University's allocated budget for this initiative is 130 million won, enabling them to serve breakfast to 250 students daily. High satisfaction levels among students have been indicated, with independent surveys showing positive ratings in taste, portion size, and meal composition, further encouraging the continuation of the program.

During the event, nutritious meals including hearty soup, grilled meat, fried eggs, and organic apples were served, highlighting the importance of regular breakfast consumption to students. President Jeong emphasized the university's responsibility to provide safe and healthy food options at affordable prices amid rising living costs, aiming to reduce breakfast skipping among students and promote a healthier campus environment conducive for focusing on their studies and career goals. Other committee members agreed, seeing the nutritious breakfast as beneficial for improving academic performance among students.
