Rio Grande do Norte experienced 1,908 lightning strikes within 24 hours, causing damage to homes in Baraúna and Mossoró, but fortunately no injuries were reported.
In a significant weather event, Rio Grande do Norte recorded a staggering 1,908 lightning strikes over a 24-hour period from Wednesday to Thursday, as reported by Neoenergia Cosern based on Climatempo data. This surge in lightning activity is particularly noteworthy, with the cities of Baraúna and Mossoró being the most affected, experiencing 464 and 261 strikes respectively. The majority of these strikes occurred during the afternoon and evening, raising concerns about the safety of residents and the potential for property damage.
A specific incident in Baraúna highlighted the dangers of such severe weather conditions, as a home was struck by lightning. This incident caused a short circuit due to interaction with the house's antenna, leading to the destruction of various electronic appliances, though fortunately, no individuals were harmed. Similarly, in the rural area of Mossoró, a direct hit from lightning severely damaged a home, creating cracks in the walls and ruining furniture and appliances, including a television and refrigerator, while the occupants were absent at the time.
These occurrences serve as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of severe weather and the potential threats lightning poses to life and property. As infrastructure and emergency response mechanisms must adapt to changing weather patterns, the local government and relevant agencies may need to review safety measures and preparedness strategies to better protect residents from future lightning strikes and extreme weather events.
