SPKC: 14 cases of measles registered so far

The SPKC has reported 14 cases of measles in Latvia, with several cases linked to a school and a high risk of further spread due to unvaccinated individuals.

The Center for Disease Prevention and Control of Latvia (SPKC) has confirmed 14 cases of measles, with recent updates showing that seven cases are laboratory confirmed while the other seven are clinically identified. Among the affected individuals, there is one adult and the remaining cases are students. The reported cases are linked to the Rīga Waldorf School, where strict compliance with SPKC recommendations is being adhered to, according to the school's director. Currently, over 1,000 contacts have been identified in relation to these cases.

SPKC has raised concerns regarding the risk of further measles transmission in Latvia, especially among the unvaccinated population, which it assesses as high. The ongoing investigation indicates difficulties in identifying all possible contacts, particularly those who may have interacted in public places. Given the highly contagious nature of measles, public health officials are urging vigilance and prompt action.

In response to the rising cases, SPKC has called upon parents and family doctors to verify children's vaccination status to ensure adherence to the vaccination schedule. Notably, the first dose of the measles vaccine is recommended between the ages of 12 to 15 months, which underscores the importance of timely vaccinations to prevent outbreaks and safeguard public health in the region.
